Trigger Awareness Program

Part of the work done at Serenity Light Recovery is to identify and understand triggers in order to employ healthy coping strategies when they arise. These coping skills are necessary in preventing relapse
as they create a safe way to deal with complicated emotions. The SCARS trigger awareness program was created specifically for this.

Our differing life experiences limit us to viewing life through our own lens. Therefore, everyone’s triggers are unique and individual to them —things that cause us to want to escape or change the way we feel— and the ability to recognize your triggers and employ the skills we have learned in treatment is half the battle to overcoming addiction. In learning about what causes negative emotions to surface we can empower our clients to use self-care methods that lead to long term recovery.

Emotional triggers are among the biggest threats to your sobriety, so your recovery counselors will work with you to identify them so that you don’t fall back into old, unproductive patterns. Several easy-to-recognize triggers can include:

  • Going to bars or clubs
  • Hanging out with friends who abuse drugs or alcohol
  • Attending parties
  • Visiting places where you have previously abused substances
  • Returning to troubled relationships
  • Living with or around unstable people
