Trauma Program
Oftentimes substance use disorder corresponds with past trauma. Our integrated trauma program is geared toward healing those who have experienced painful events to cope with trauma and prevent future relapse.
Traumatic experiences can include:
Physical, verbal, or emotional abuse, neglect, loss, natural disasters and witnessing violence.
If an individual doesn’t process and address devastating life events, it can often lead to drug and alcohol addiction in order to numb the pain. This also results in a higher risk for psychological issues such as anxiety and depression.
What does trauma therapy involve?
Trauma therapy refers to a type of therapy used by mental health professionals to help individuals prevail over past traumatic experiences, whether in childhood or later in life, that rob a person of their ability to cope. Our program at Serenity Light Recovery provides individuals with a private outlet in which they can share their experiences and start to address the demons that may haunt them. A combination of therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), are well-known techniques used to assist one with overcoming the feelings and thoughts associated with trauma.
Cognitive behavioral therapy in the trauma-focused space refers to talk therapy that specializes in the treatment of past trauma by addressing an individual’s thoughts regarding their traumatic experience. It can be helpful for children and adults, and is best in conjunction with other therapies. In some cases, it’s necessary to extend trauma therapy sessions even after treatment ends.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a comparatively new, but incredibly effective, psychotherapy that helps individuals develop healthier methods for processing painful experiences. Read more about EMDR here.
